The capacity is beyond generous—the main compartment fit my extra-long clubs with no issue, along with six pairs of shoes inside: one in the exterior dedicated shoe pocket and five more inside the main compartment alongside the carry bag. I could have likely fit six more and, in fact, I put in a few days worth of dirty laundry in the bag on the way home to save space in my carry-on bag.

The interior also has a padded sleeve to cover the heads of your clubs, an extendable “Defender” rod to keep your woods safe, and straps to keep everything in place. It deftly maneuvered busy airports and rental car shuttles with its reinforced bottom and wheels, and it was easy to load into vehicles due to all the plush, sturdy handles. If you’re looking for a tall and spacious travel bag, especially if you usually have to remove driver and wood heads to fit or have a larger cart bag, the Ogio Alpha Mid is your best bet as it’s the roomiest bag we tested. In addition to the extra length, we especially liked the exterior pockets—they made it really easy to access items quickly without having to dig through the entire bag. This is a less protective bag than others due to the soft construction.

The main issue with golf travel bags is that for the days (and let’s be honest, unless you’re a tour pro, months) you’re not using it to bring your clubs on car and plane trips, it’s a big piece of luggage to store. We were really impressed with the unique and incredibly effective wheels that helped make maneuvering through airports a breeze. A fold-out set of legs with wheels allows you to prop the bag up at a 45 degree angle to access your items and keep it stable on the go. While the bag itself is durable and lined with thick foam, we do recommend adding padding to your club heads if you want to prevent them from clanking around.

A great all-around bag, with a fantastic warranty, the only issue we found in our testing is that it is not as generously spacious as its competition, so it may not work for those with larger or longer equipment.

A super-sturdy carry and cart bag with a unique 14-club divider top, it’s versatile and secure for any kind of golf travel.

Golfing while traveling is different from golfing locally in that you want all of your gear with you to avoid unnecessary charges at the pro shop and high scores because you are missing a trusty rescue club. We took a variety of golf travel bags on road trips and flights across the country full of clubs, shoes, rain gear, and accessories while evaluating maneuverability, durability, toughness, balance, and capacity. When we first received the bags, we opened them and examined the fabric, straps, organizational compartments, and other special features. We tested the use of all zippers and fasteners before packing the bag with our gear.

After our initial evaluation, we packed the bags using all of the pockets and compartments, noting if they were the appropriate sizes and had padding for protection. We then brought the bag on at least two golf trips, including road trips and flights. While transporting the bag, we took note of how protective the golf bag felt and whether or not it featured padding, reinforced segments, stiff arms, or other supportive designs.

While playing on the course, we utilized shoulder straps and handles as well as wheels for transport and assessed their portability as well as gear accessibility during play. We utilized any stand mechanisms on different terrains to evaluate its stability. At the end of our initial testing period, we reevaluated the materials, straps, and hardware of the bag, looking for damage and scuffs.

After packing up the travel bags, our traveling golfers tested portability by carrying and wheeling the bags to get a feel for how they maneuvered. The top performing bags for portability were exceptionally easy to lift and wheel with comfortable, padded straps and handles. The most durable bags stood up well to car and plane travel, with no damage to the exterior or items on the interior. We determined that the bags with the best value performed as or better than expected given the price, especially pricier bags that needed robust justification for the cost.

Travel + Leisure

These cases are protecting your most essential asset on the course, your clubs, and therefore need to be able to take the brunt of abuse that would otherwise affect your irons and woods. Their fabric and exteriors should hold up to water and dirt, their padding should be generous and cushioning, and their wheels should be able to glide over not just perfect airport floors, but stone walkways, grass, and asphalt.

You will be lugging this piece of luggage around quite a bit, so look for slick wheels as well as finer details like straps, handles, buckles, and zippers to ensure your bag is portable and travel-friendly. Things like sturdy wheelbases that allow it to stand upright are important in crowded shuttles, and a heavy-duty handle is your assurance of safety when grabbing it off the oversize carousel.

A standard set for golf is 14 clubs, and your carry or cart bag can hold that as well as balls, tees, and accessories. But think about the bigger capacity you require for traveling for golf: your shoes (yes, plural at least), an umbrella, weather-ready gear, and maybe even a few things you can’t get into your carry-on, like a sweatshirt, extra pair of pants, or the souvenirs from the pro shop you need to bring back. All of this needs to fit alongside your clubs (and if you pack it right, can help protect them), so ensure you have the right amount of space in the travel bag.

If you only care about the safety and security of the clubs themselves, a hard case is essential but won't provide you with a lot of extra packing space. If you need it to store more than clubs and the bag, then you likely need a soft case, which provides still-great, but less guaranteed protection, yet adds the space to pack one bag for many needs on the trip.

There are many tips and tricks to protecting your clubs, but the first is to pack your bag full with soft items like clothing, towels, and even shoes to cushion any impact that may come. Secure belongings within the bag using straps and be sure to zip up and close any pockets, so things can move as little as possible. If you are really mindful of protection, you can even take the heads off your drivers, woods, and irons to wrap and pack them separately.

Yes. TSA will check golf bags as oversized luggage whether it is a hard or soft case. Most cases come with TSA-compliant locks and clasps, and it’s a good idea to check and rearrange the contents of your bag as soon as you pick it back up from baggage claim to confirm nothing went missing or broke in transit.
